Maharashtra Day 2023: History, Significance, and Important Information
Every year on May 1st, Maharashtra Day is observed to honour the creation of the Indian state of Maharashtra. According to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, Gujarat and Maharashtra were created out of the state of Bombay on May 1, 1960. Since then, the creation of the state of Maharashtra has been honoured with the celebration of Maharashtra Day.
Maharashtra was a part of the Bombay Presidency until 1960, which also encompassed parts of the present-day states of Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Beginning in the 1950s, proponents of an independent state of Maharashtra included Keshavrao Jedhe, Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, and Acharya Atre.
The State Reorganisation Act, which established the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, was approved by the Indian Parliament on May 1, 1960, following years of protests and political wrangling. The former capital of the Bombay Presidency, the city of Mumbai, is now the capital of Maharashtra.
